Court challenge to overturn HEZ development approval
A dispute over the approval of an industrial development in the Hunter Valley heads back to the Land and Environment Court today.
Community group Friends of Tumblebee is taking action against Cessnock Council after it approved the development in the Hunter Economic Zone near Kurri Kurri.
The group said the steel fabrication plant will have a disastrous impact on the critically endangered bird, the Regent Honeyeater.
Group president and Greens councillor James Ryan said the four-day hearing starts today.
“There’s possibly somewhere between 300 and 400 of these birds left,” he said.
“They use that bushland, just near Kurri Kurri, to breed in.
“It’s extremely important for them and their survival that that bushland remains there, and they remain able to breed and nest in it.”
