A sad day for public assets and the people of Newcastle and NSW

So Mike Baird has sold a 98 year lease of the Port of Newcastle to a consortium half owned by the Chinese Government.

The Chinese Government understands something that the NSW Government doesn’t; that is that there is a public purpose in owning and controlling strategically important  infrastructure. For the Chinese the importance is in promoting their own economic growth. I expect they will use our port to increase coal traffic and any other industry which makes their elites wealthy.

For us the strategic importance of the Port is in not being locked into a fossil fuel future. Of being able to transition to a sustainable future for the Hunter which would provide more jobs and better security for our residents.

Once again the Government of NSW shows its support for big business at the expense of the well being of the people of NSW. It is a sad day.
