Naming of Cup ‘not an ego trip’ – Cessnock Mayor
Sometimes I try to bust the elitist bubble in local government. The idea that some politicians are more equal than others is hard to shift, particularly in a town where the ALP Mayor still wears the ‘robes’. No wonder Abbott thinks he can get away with reintroducing knights and dames.

Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent defended a move yesterday to support the creation of a “Mayor’s Cup” for Kurri Kurri Speedway Club.
Clr Pynsent raised the matter at a Council meeting and moved that the Council spend up to $500 on a trophy for the cup.
Councillor James Ryan said naming a cup after the mayor was an “elistist idea”.
“The Mayor has no more power than the Councillors.’ he said.
Clr Ryan thought it should be called the “People’s Cup”.
Clr Pynsent said he had simply put a request from the speedway club ‘in good faith’. “This is not an ego trip for me.” he said. “I have no connection to the club.”
Councillor Morgan Campbell said that if it was the “Bob Pynsent Cup” he would understand Clr Ryan’s position. Councillors voted 10 – 1 to support the request and spend up to $500 on the trophy.
