Cessnock takes firm stand against CSG

Cessnock Council has voted unanimously to block AGL from accessing council land for coal seam gas exploration.

Earlier, Labor Councillor Jeff Maybury had indicated he may be considering voting in support of AGL’s plans, saying he saw significant benefits for the region from coal seam gas.

Greens Councillor James Ryan says the jury is still out on the risks the industry poses to the environment.

He says he would like other Hunter region councils to make a similar stand to Cessnock.

“It would be good if councils in the Hunter got together to take a joint position on coal seam gas,” he said.

“I know Singleton has also passed resolutions to prevent use of their roads by coal seam gas companies.

“I would like to see more action from local government on keeping our environment safe.”
