Strong result for Greens in Cessnock – thank you to all our helpers.
Polling 8.5% has been a good result for Cessnock Greens in what was a tough election. For the first time ever Cessnock had three big budget campaigns, one each from Labor, the Nationals and Dale Troy.
Cessnock is still undecided with a full preferences count yet to occur. It might well be that the ALP win Cessnock on just 34% of the vote even though clearly the majority of voters did not want Labor. The result will depend on how many voters marked a preference on their balllot paper. The ALP had workers at the pollling booths encouraging all voters just to vote 1 in a deliberate strategy to prevent anyone else winning Cessnock. Many voters thought these workers were polling officials as they were not clearly identified as Labor and were dressed in official looking white shirts. In my view this was a cheap and unethical strategy.
